Due to the new harmonised National Workplace Health and Safety regulations what is required to obtain an Asbestos Removal Licence has changed.

Under the new harmonised National Workplace Health and Safety regulations, Class A Asbestos Removalists require a safety management system certified to AS4801:2001 Occupational health and safety management systems (AS4801:2001) in order to obtain their Asbestos Removal Licence (except in the Australian Capital Territory), Noel Arnold & Associates (NAA) explains.
The company notes that a Class A Asbestos Removal Licence allows the licence holder to remove friable asbestos, non-friable asbestos and asbestos contaminated dust (ACD), while Class B licence holders are restricted to the removal of non-friable asbestos and any associated ACD.
Regulation 493(1)(e) specifically requires Class A licence applicants to provide evidence they have a certified safety management system in place, meaning a system that complies with AS4801:2001 and has been formally accredited by an external certification body, NAA adds.
