Daikin Australia’s Queensland logistics, training and sales hub has become the first industrial site in Australia to receive a Platinum WELL Core Certification.
Awarded by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), the certification is built around evidence-based, health-focused design.
Located in Murrarie, Daikin Park Brisbane’s certification was achieved under WELL v2TM, the latest version of the WELL Building Standard, a performance-based system focused on how buildings affect the health and wellbeing of the people working in them.
The facility’s Platinum level was based on several environmental categories of the WELL Building Standard –including air, water, light, nourishment, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind and community.
The Park’s main contributing features to obtaining the certification included six electric vehicle charging stations, eight low-emission vehicle parking spaces, 1.3-megawatt solar-powered hot water, 380 indoor plants and 40,000 litres of rainwater harvesting tanks.
The facility was also designed using Daikin’s energy-efficient Heat Recovery Variable Refrigerant Volume air-conditioning system.
“By becoming the first industrial project in Australia to achieve WELL Core Platinum Certification, Daikin Park Brisbane demonstrates that health and wellbeing are becoming integral considerations in the design and operation of industrial workplaces,” says International WELL Building Institute senior vice president and head of Asia Pacific Jack Noonan.
To secure the certification, Daikin Park Brisbane underwent rigorous performance testing and a final evaluation carried out by third parties to ensure it met all the certificate’s performance requirements.
The flagship 13,609-square metre facility is powered by Manhattan Warehouse Management System and serves Queensland customers with goods and spare parts.
It also houses a Daikin Trade Centre, training academy, showroom and sales office. It is one of four Daikin Park locations, with a fifth due to open in Western Australia later this year.
“This project shows that logistics infrastructure doesn’t have to compromise on people-centred design, and we’re proud to set that standard for the industry in the region,” says Daikin Australia general manager of SCM and IT Michael Trad.
In addition to the platinum certification, the building holds a 6 Star Green Star Design and As Built rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.
Towards the end of last year, Daikin opened a $28.6 million local manufacturing facility in Chipping Norton, NSW. The Factory 2 expands its capability to produce customised air-handling units and rooftop packaged air-conditioners as part of its global ‘local products for local markets’ strategy and incorporates autonomous mobile robots, expanded solar photovoltaic generation and digitalised sale-to-manufacture processing to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
