A new fire system at Deakin University provides staff with improved control over potential fire risks on the university’s campuses, which include multiple disconnected buildings.
A comprehensive fire detection solution has been installed at Deakin University. Installed by Wormald, the new system provides staff with improved control over potential fire risks on the university’s campuses, which include multiple disconnected buildings.
The system’s graphical interface instantly displays the status of the fire detectors at each building. University employees now have the ability to monitor the fire detection systems from any computer with an Internet connection. They can also investigate or deactivate alarms without physically visiting the building. By receiving information from each individual detector, employees can easily identify the location of a fire and quickly devise an appropriate response.
The comprehensive fire detection solution includes 17 MX1 fire indicator panels. Wormald provided 4000 analogue addressable detectors, including MX814H heat detectors and MX814P smoke detectors.
MX Technology fire detection systems were installed at each of the university’s three campuses, which are interconnected using the university’s intranet. Applying the MX fire detection systems across such a vast area is a first for the industry – the university’s three campuses in Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool are over 260 kilometres apart. Russell Ormston, building services engineering manager at Deakin University, says that the university now has control over the fire detection systems at multiple campuses from a single point.
To help control costs, Wormald reused much of the original fire detector wiring and integrated the system through the university’s existing intranet. In addition, the system’s flexibility means it can be expanded or reconfigured as new buildings are added or existing buildings change function.
