It’s been a stellar first half of the year for the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). It’s taken the concepts of sustainability and circularity and applied them to aspects of the built environment that were in dire need of direction and order.
In March, for example, it announced its Green Star Fitouts, a new national rating tool that addresses the growing carbon and waste impact of interiors. As it rightly pointed out, it is the first tool of its kind in the country to embed circularity as a core requirement for fitouts, setting a benchmark for how interior projects are designed, delivered and refreshed. It comes at a time when the data tells us that traditional commercial fitouts embed around 200 kilograms of carbon per square metre, mainly due to demolition and replacement cycles.
Later that same month, the GBCA addressed another burgeoning sector of the built environment – the build-to-rent (BTR) space. It noted that more than a third of Australia’s BTR pipeline is registered for Green Star Buildings. According to the GBCA, as of March this year, 50 BTR projects across more than 16,000 apartments were already registered for Green Star Buildings ratings. If the BTR sector grows to 10 percent of Australia’s apartment market – which would account for around 250,000 homes – and Green Star embedded as a baseline, the real-world impact would be around 150 million kilograms of carbon emissions avoided each year across homes for around 450,000 Australians.
In April, the GBCA turned its attention to data centres, a subject matter that is sparking animated debate among business leaders, communities and stakeholders. In a bid to steer that conversation, the GBCA announced its first Sustainable Data Centres program to explore what best-practice sustainability outcomes in the design, construction and operation of data centres in the country could and should look like.
Clearly, the GBCA has been firing on all cylinders this year. It is against this backdrop that we are very pleased to announce that, for the second consecutive year, the GBCA has partnered with FM Media to come on board as the Supporting Partner for its upcoming sustainability-themed edition.
“We look forward to partnering with Facility Management magazine once again in 2026,” GBCA head of Industry Development and Communications Lucy Harris says.
“The magazine’s readers keep our buildings running safely, efficiently and sustainably – priorities that align closely with GBCA’s own mission to champion buildings and places that are healthier and better for the planet, and the people who live and work in them.”
Our upcoming edition will be out this September. The issue will feature several crossover subjects in which the GBCA is actively engaged, including BTR offerings and data centres.
The magazine will be available in both print and digital formats and will reach a combined readership of 50,000.
While the GBCA is working on developing best practices around sustainability in the built environment, FM Media will play a key role in amplifying that messaging – truly a partnership that keeps on giving.
