Simple measures that can be put in place to plan for flooding and minimise the financial impact that flooding causes.

Owners and managers can put simple measures in place to plan for flooding and minimise the financial impact that flooding causes, according to Jenny Boymal, managing director of Jena Dyco International, a specialty drying and restoration training school. Boymal recommends that owners and managers carry out the following steps to put a flood management contingency plan in place:

1. Make contact with a professional drying firm that specialises in your type of facility.
If you’re flooded, then chances are other facilities are also flooded, meaning that many of the top-quality drying firms will be too busy to take your calls. Organise to meet with some high-quality, recommended drying specialised firms prior to flooding so that you have the contacts in place in case of an emergency.

2. Develop a plan.
A good commercial drying firm should be able to meet with you and help you develop a plan for drying your property quickly and effectively. They should be able to take into account how to implement drying processes with minimal effects to your business. With this type of plan in place it is possible that a portion of damaged rooms can be dried early and put into use soon after damage has occurred, while other areas continue to dry.

3. Ask the right questions.
You may not understand the answers you get but questions such as ‘how will you assess the damage’, and ‘what qualifications do you have’ will help you to identify if you are dealing with a professional firm that understands commercial drying properties. You should also ask them to outline how their drying processes will minimise any interruption flood damage may cause to your business.

“A flood doesn’t need to bring business to a stop,” Boymal states. “If you take the time to meet with expert drying specialists and discuss an emergency plan it will save a lot of money and stress when catastrophe hits. That way, all you need to do when you receive that dreaded phone call is get in touch with your drying specialist and set the plan in motion.”
