Brookfield Multiplex has recently completed work on Macquarie Group’s new global headquarters at 50 Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD.

Located on the corner of Martin Place and Elizabeth Street and above the existing heritage-listed banking chamber occupied by the Commonwealth Bank, the refurbishment transformed the historic 1928 building into a contemporary commercial office of more than 20,000 square metres over 11 levels.

This integrated interior fitout project involved demolition works, widening of the existing atrium, construction of a two-storey glass-domed roof and circular glass shuttle lifts in addition to installation of a new building services and systems. An internal atrium stairway was also constructed to provide greater interconnectivity and encourage collaboration between employees.

“50 Martin Place was a complex project with plenty of challenges,” David Ghannoum, Brookfield Multiplex Regional Managing Director, NSW said. “Site logistics were complicated by the busy CBD location and the confines of the existing building, construction had to be carried out with minimal disruption to the Commonwealth Bank still operating on the ground floor and the building had extensive heritage-listed aspects.”

Being initially appointed on an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) basis allowed Brookfield Multiplex to jointly finalise the scope and design with Macquarie Group and other stakeholders and to identify opportunities to improve cost and program outcomes before construction commenced.

The project has already received a six Star Green Star Design rating.
