A vegetable patch in the heart of the city, worm farm tours, and bicycle rides are among a series of unique events encouraging Melburnians to live a greener life as part of the Sustainable Living Festival. The event runs from 7 February to 1 March 2015.
The City of Melbourne has planned a series of 11 fun and thought-provoking activities aimed at making people think about the environmental issues affecting Melbourne.
Events include:
Grow Show: See the pavement outside Town Hall transformed into a vegetable patch and learn how to grow your own food during lunchtime pop-up talks in the marquee. When: talks from 1pm to 2pm, 7 to 28 February.
Vegetarian Picnic: Fill your basket with some creative vegetarian options and picnic at Buluk Park in Docklands this Valentine’s Day. When: 11 to 3pm, 14 February.
Behind the laneway: Go behind the scenes to discover the machines and worms at the Degraves Street Recycling Facility. When: Saturday 11am to noon; Sunday 11.45am to 12.45pm from 7 to 28 February.
Building Run Melbourne: See a real-time video installation where athletes compete in a daily race for greater energy efficiency. When: 12:30pm to 1:15pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and 1.30pm – 2.30pm on Friday, 10 to 15 February.
1000 cities: Using a smartphone, a bike and a helmet, join this interactive game to fight monsters, collect treasure, and explore hidden parts of the city. When: all day from 7 February to 1 March.
Eco-hub at Boyd: Learn about worm farming in an urban dwelling or how to garden in a small space. When: 10am to 11.30am, Saturday 7 February.
Greening the arts: Hear stories about greening arts practice from Matt Wicking, Arts House Greenie- in-Residence. When: 6 to 8pm, Thursday 19 February.
It’s all about the bees: Join crafty activities and stories about buzzing bees for children, as well as events for adults such an evening panel on green investment and finances, and books and resources about sustainability. When: 2 to 28 February.
Lunchbox bike tours: Be provided with a bike, a free healthy lunchbox and learn how to safely navigate the central city. When: 12.30pm to 1.15pm, Tuesdays and Fridays in February.
Fitzroy Gardens guided walk: Explore the amazing new visitor centre and stormwater harvesting system in this much-loved public space. When: 10am to 11.30am, Tuesday 20 February.
Sustainable kids’ activities: Kids can take part in sustainable activities such as making art, tasty treats from bees, and sustainable ceramics. When: 11 February to 1 March.
