UTS Building

The first and largest of three state-of-the-art buildings for the University of Technology, Sydney’s billion-dollar City Campus Master Plan, has opened in Ultimo.

The new UTS Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT) building is clad in a striking aluminium ‘binary code screen’ perforated with 1s and 0s.

Designed by Melbourne-based architect Denton Corker Marshall, the building itself will operate as a ‘living lab’ that embodies leading edge sustainable technology features, such as a wind turbine, water recycling and solar panel technology. Data from these elements will be captured and can be displayed in real-time on screens installed throughout the entire building, with data also used for teaching and research purposes.

The design achieves a five-star Green Star rating and is expected to deliver a number of sustainable design benefits including:

  • an energy saving of 30 to 45 percent
  • a potable water saving of 20 to 30 percent, and
  • a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over benchmark tertiary educational buildings with similar functional spaces.

The building’s façade, while serving an aesthetic function, also reduces the overall solar load on the building through shading and will provide energy savings of up to 10 to 15 percent.
