Sixty-five percent of mice and keyboards in Logitech’s largest product portfolio now use post-consumer recycled plastic.
In 2020, the company made a commitment to include post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic in 50 percent of all mice and keyboards in its Creativity and Productivity portfolio – its largest.
In a media release, Logitech says its use of PCRs has grown rapidly over the last two years, driving new capabilities and further innovations on its design, manufacturing and sourcing.
The company boasts, “An estimated 8000 tonnes of virgin plastic was eliminated in Logitech products in 2021.”
Percentages of PCR used in each product varies, depending on the type, colour and material make-up and ranges from 20 percent to 75 percent.
“Now all consumers have a breadth of choice when it comes to selecting mice and keyboards that are aligned with their sustainable lifestyle preferences,” says Delphine Donne-Crock, general manager of creativity and productivity at Logitech.
Many PCR resins have been limited to black or grey and do not typically perform in the same way as virgin plastic, and the company says it has innovated on material characteristics to give them a second life. With the help of trusted suppliers, Logitech has been able to produce a palette of more than 30 colours.
“The design goal is to maximise the percentage of recycled content in each product while ensuring high aesthetic appeal and durability tests are met,” says the release.
All of the PCR plastic used in Logitech products comes from end-of-life consumer electronics.
The company is a signatory to Amazon and Global Optimism’s Climate Pledge and has set itself on a direct path to be climate positive beyond 2030 by capturing more carbon than it creates.
