The new facility, delivered by Multiplex, will provide state-of-the-art clinical and emergency services to 339 beds over seven floors.

Features of the 50,000-square metre build include retail space and clinical departments needed for direct public access on the ground floor, and a plant room and helipad on the roof.

It also includes paediatric, maternity and chemotherapy facilities, a central sterile services department, pharmacy, pathology, isolation rooms and plaster rooms, as well as gyms to support general and mental health services.

In addition, the construction project upgraded internal and external roadwork.

The two-and-a-half-year build generated 3465 jobs all up, with 600 people working on-site per day at its peak.

Based on GreenStar criteria, the project targeted a minimum of 45 points, which included a waste reduction and recycling scheme, that generated only 3.6 kilograms of waste per square metre, and enabled more than 90 percent of that waste to be recycled, according to a Multiplex media release.

More than 2500 photovoltaic solar panels were also installed as part of the new 1.16-megawatt solar system on the roof of the hospital’s northern car park.

Multiplex boasts the social value outcomes of the build, with the Maitland Connectivity Centre linking local job seekers with job opportunities on the project delivering more than 50 Indigenous candidate placements and 15 traineeships.

“We’re really pleased to have delivered the new Maitland Hospital safely, on time and to the high standard of quality required by hospitals, and we’re equally proud of the social and environmental benefits we were able to incorporate into the project,” says Multiplex regional director David Ghannoum.
