Tesla home HVAC system still on the cards

Elon Musk has once again teased a Tesla home HVAC system in a tweet earlier this month.

On July 19, a Twitter user and Tesla shareholder, according to their bio, asked Musk to make a home HVAC with a HEPA filter. It was to help with their allergies.

“It’s on the future product list,” the Tesla CEO replied.

It’s not the first time Musk has hinted at a Tesla home HVAC system.

On Tesla’s annual shareholder day in September 2020, Musk described home HVAC as a “pet project” that he’d love to get going.

“I don’t know, maybe we’ll start working on that next year,” he said at the time.

“You could really make a way better home HVAC system that’s really quiet and super energy efficient, and also has a way better filter for particles, and it works very reliably.”

Tesla’s HVAC system for cars

Tesla has already developed a car HVAC system, so it has done a lot of the ground work for a residential version. According to the company, Tesla’s air filtration system took inspiration from those used in hospitals, clean rooms and the aerospace industry. It’s said to remove 99.97 percent of airborne particles. The ‘Bioweapon Defence Mode’ can then pressurise the cabin to prevent pollutants leaking in and filter the air through the HEPA filters.

Musk Tweeted again in July 2021 that Tesla’s car HVAC system could be scaled up for home use.

“And then you could also communicate with the car and it’ll know when you’re coming home,” Musk said at the annual shareholder meeting.

“…just really dial it into when you actually need cooling and heating.”

Musk’s recent Tweet is about all the information available from Tesla online about a home HVAC system. While it would complement its home energy products, it’s still unknown when and if Tesla will officially unveil a home HVAC system and potentially disrupt the market.
