Senior facilities managers, facilities officers and cleaning managers are in demand at present in Australia’s facilities management market, according to Hays Facilities Management.

Hays Facilities Management has released its latest Hays Quarterly Hotspots list of jobs in demand, which in Australia’s facilities management market include senior facilities managers, facilities officers and cleaning managers.
“The gloss has gone off the resources and mining sector, and we are moving away from a two-speed economy to a system of micro-economies that are creating pockets of employment opportunities – even in the most challenged sectors,” Adam Shapley, regional director of Hays Facilities Management, states. “Demand is not evident in every function in every location, but there are pockets of specific skill shortages. Employers are replacing departing staff and making selective staff investments in roles that can add immediate value to their business.”
However, he warns that employers have high expectations when they recruit. “Employers will only make job offers to the top tier candidates. They are still looking for industry specific skills and background that matches their industry. Job losses tend to be more visible than job gains, but we are seeing more jobs created than lost and there is still tempered confidence in the market and in a number of sectors,” he adds.
According to the Hays Quarterly Hotspots list, demand exists for the following skilled professionals in Australia’s facilities management market:

  • Senior facilities managers: We are seeing steady demand for candidates with good skill sets who are capable of looking after commercial office portfolios or large multi-storey buildings. Demand is the result of staff transitions, relocations and a number of newly built facilities or facilities under development. This is evident across the owner-operator and agency sectors.
  • Senior building engineers (M&E/HVAC): Building engineers/technical facilities managers with degrees or diplomas in building services disciplines are sought to run maintenance and refurbishments within major commercial offices. We have also seen increased demand for skills and experience within the healthcare sector.
  • Facilities/building managers: There is a mix of demand from agencies to work within commercial offices (single and multi-site responsibilities), as well as service providers working across single buildings or mobile across larger contracts. In addition, employers who need a building manager on site all day every day constantly need contract candidates to relieve staff absences and meet their contractual obligations.
  • Operations managers/retail facilities managers: We are seeing a need for temporary, fixed-term and permanent facilities staff to work within shopping centres. This demand will continue over the coming months. We are also seeing a need for operations managers to work within the cleaning sector, where new companies are opening and existing companies are expanding.
  • Facilities officers: A number of state and local government departments, and not-for-profit organisations require temporary and fixed-term staff to support their existing employees with high workloads. We expect demand to continue throughout the remainder of 2013.
  • Data centre managers: These candidates are in high demand due to the number of new data centres opening in response to overseas investment, an increase in off-site storage for businesses, cloud technology, businesses spreading over multiple sites, and the increase in mobile internet banking, itunes and other internet usage.
  • Cleaning managers: Cleaning companies that are expanding rapidly are looking for cleaning managers.
