Victaulic, the world’s leading manufacturer of mechanical pipe-joining systems, has reported a local project success for the new Vortex fire suppression system.

In February 2019, WSP – one of the world’s leading engineering professional services consulting firms – chose the Vortex fire suppression system for the main server room of its new Brisbane office in Fortitude Valley, Queensland.

Aaron Zyle, WSP project lead and associate says, “Innovation was a major driver in selecting the system. As this project was part of a new fitout, we wanted a leading-edge solution that would address our needs for safety in a breakthrough manner.”

The Victaulic Vortex fire suppression system efficiently absorbs heat and reduces oxygen to extinguish fires. It uses water droplets smaller than white blood cells and a naturally occurring gas, nitrogen, that are discharged from a single emitter to effectively suppress fire. Unlike many standard wet-sprinkler alternatives, the system has the ability to have nearly zero wetting and negates the need for assurance of tight room integrity. This means the system can be easily installed by contractors without requiring a costly cleanup or equipment replacement.

“The Vortex system is providing safety benefits to WSP. Due to the fact we were installing a fire protection system for our main communications room, we wanted to provide a greater level of safety than what is offered by base-option alternative systems, and the Vortex system gave us that”, says Zyle.

Choosing the Vortex system has had a flow on benefit for WSP. Zyle confidently recommends the innovative system to his clients. “The Vortex system fit our brief perfectly and has delivered the desired outcomes. Having had the opportunity to interact with it firsthand means that we are happy to recommend it to our clients.”

Victaulic Fire Protection Specialist, Corey Stone, says, “WSP specialises in providing comprehensive fire engineering design briefs and strategies for some of the world’s most iconic projects. Having some of the industry’s leading fire professionals implement our system to safeguard WSP’s data is a fantastic endorsement of our product”.

The Vortex line includes the Victaulic Vortex 500, 1000 and 1500 systems. The Victaulic Vortex 1500, used in this project, is FM Approved under FM5580 standard for Fixed Extinguishing Systems, Hybrid (Water and Inert Gas) for the protection of combustion turbines, machinery spaces and special hazard machinery spaces in enclosures with volumes not exceeding 127,525 ft3 / 3600 m3 and a maximum height of 24.6 ft / 7.5 m.
