Banksia Awards

Woolworths Group has won the Gold Banksia Award at the 34th Banksia National Sustainability Awards – Australia’s longest running sustainability awards.

Run by the Banksia Foundation, the awards recognise leadership in biodiversity, climate change, and among First Nations people, “reinforcing the diversity of sustainability” over 15 categories.

This year’s winners were announced at a gala event in Melbourne last Thursday 23 March and range from Australia’s largest retailer to government agencies, community leaders, non-profit organisations and small businesses from across the nation.

Woolworths wins gold

Woolworths Group won the Gold Banksia Award and Large Business Sustainable Leadership Award for its work in driving “one of the deepest transformational programs” seen in an Australian company in recent years, according to Woolworths.

“Our sustainability program has brought teams right across Woolworths Group together to collectively drive short and long-term action on our ambitions across our pillars of People, Planet and Product,” the retailer says.

Ventia recognised for diversity and inclusion

Other notable winners include infrastructure services provider Ventia, which won the overall award in the Diversity and Inclusion category.

“In Australia, people with a disability are estimated to make up 18 percent of our population, but only 53 percent of them are participating in the labour force,” says Matt Cook, the project director on Ventia’s NSW Whole of Government Cleaning Contract.

“To build and maintain the diversity we wanted to see in our business, we recognised there was a largely untapped pool of talented, capable, and committed people and through a focus on disability employment we could also reduce inequalities.”
