Attempting to address the skills shortage within the FM sector without realising the glaring underrepresentation of women in facility management is a textbook case of missing the wood for the trees.
According to a report by the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), women account for only 20 percent of the FM workforce globally.
The ‘Women in FM: A Global Salary and Compensation Supplementary Report‘ makes a compelling case to improve the retention and representation, and reduce the attrition rates, of women in the facility management sector.
It is also what led us to develop the ‘Women in FM’ theme for our next quarterly print edition, out this March to coincide with International Women’s Day.
The edition will feature voices of leading women within the industry – challenging stereotypes, demonstrating inclusive leadership, finding new ways to strengthen operational excellence and reinvigorating workplace culture to make it measurably more inclusive.
We will also be focusing on a number of different aspects of the FM industry including HVAC&R, healthcare facility management, cybersecurity and multi-unit residential accommodations.
Stay tuned for our regular sections including Meet Your Local FM, View from the Top and Event Spotlight, among others.
Over the rest of 2026, our other quarterly editions will focus on World FM Day (May), Sustainability in FM (September) and Reflections and Projections (December).
But before we get to them, we are now in the final stages of putting together our March edition. If you need to know just one more thing to convince you that we’ve got the right theme for it, consider this. An IFMA survey found that one of the key issues why women continue to be underrepresented in FM is that the average person doesn’t understand what facilities management entails.
Through our upcoming magazine, available in both print and digital formats, we reach a combined readership of 50,000.
It will be read by facilities management professionals of iconic venues, public spaces and FM-related organisations – increasing awareness about the sector as far and wide as possible.
If one of the biggest stumbling blocks to getting more women to join the industry is awareness of the sector and its nuances, then we at FM Media are doing all that we can to address that issue head-on.
