Renewable Energy Indicator

The National Australian Built Environment Rating System, or NABERS, will preview its highly anticipated Renewable Energy Indicator (REI) in a webinar this week.

What is NABERS?

NABERS is a government, performance-based sustainability rating for the built environment that was established in 1998. Like the efficiency star ratings on a fridge or washing machine, NABERS provides a simple rating from one to six stars for a building’s efficiency across energy, water, waste and indoor environment.

Lendlease’s Barangaroo International Towers portfolio recently ranked first for Energy and Water in NABERS Sustainable Portfolio Index, with a result of six stars. This was the first time an average six-star NABERS energy rating was awarded across 100 percent of a portfolio.

Valid for twelve months, the NABERS annual rating helps facility managers understand their building’s operational performance in comparison with similar buildings and provides a benchmark for progress.

The Renewable Energy Indicator

The new component in the NABERS rating will recognise the generation and purchase of renewable energy. The REI takes into account electricity, gas and diesel consumption, providing “clear and transparent information” about the proportion of renewable energy used in a building, according to NABERS.

Expected to be launched in the first half of the year, the REI will be a mandatory part of a NABERS energy rating for all building types, meaning energy ratings will also include an REI result.

Preview the REI

NABERS is holding a high-level run-through of what the new indicator means for facilities in its REI preview webinar this Thursday 11 May at 10:00am AEST.

“This is your opportunity to find out more about this new development, the ways it will help you on your journey toward reducing emissions and how it will be part of reaching Australia’s net-zero targets,” NABERS says.
